My biggest mistake was installing Joomla with its pre-made data. So, having all of its data installed and trying to piece together what was what, what depended on what, and basically how to get anything to work together, became quite the undertaking!
I recently installed Joomla on another domain of mine, but this time without their pre-made data. The result was that I actually learned how to piece everything together and figure out, by minor trial and error, exactly how things were created and how to get the site going quickly.
My turn-around time was an afternoon - that includes installing the software. The only reason it took those several afternoon hours was mostly because I was screwing around with templates/themes and placement of my newly created modules.
At one point, I was about to abandon Joomla or at least not create any new sites with it. I don't much like tweaking every little thing, i.e. CSS, etc..., though I do have the knowledge to do so. Everything doesn't have to be completely different; there's no need to re-invent the wheel.
Before I move off to a tangent here, the main point I am making with a Joomla install and getting it going is to NOT install their test data! When I did this originally, it distracted me a great deal and very little made sense. Installing the base system without all the data proved a world of difference to me and has renewed my interest in the Joomla CMS.
Oddly, the installation process suggests installing the pre-made data if you're a beginner! I think that's great if you simply want to see how things might look, but not so great to figure out how objects relate to one another.
