OSCommerce and SSL

E-mail Print PDF

Keep in mind, when you buy SSL, you buy it for the root domain normally.  That is, if you want it for www.roanokemerchants.com, then you should buy it from www.roanokemerchants.com, not roanokemerchants.com.  Either way doesn't honestly matter, the challenge is in keeping your configure.php file correct to match the URL the SSL certificate includes.  Here is a partial example of a configure.php with SSL enabled:

define('HTTP_SERVER', 'http://www.roanokemerchants.com');

define('HTTPS_SERVER', 'https://www.roanokemerchants.com');

define('ENABLE_SSL', true);

OS Commerce and Help Center Live

E-mail Print PDF

My Roanoke Merchants site continues to evolve as I make minor, yet important changes.  I installed Help Center Live version 2.1.7 today on this site.  At first, I was not able to get the pages to give me the full SSL.  I was getting the message that the page contained both secure and non-secure items.  Of course, I had to figure out why this was happening so that my site would give those who visit the security the site is boasting.  Eventually, I found the culprit URL in the config.php file.  It is listed as $conf['url'] = 'https://roanokemerchants.com/catalog/support';

The install was rather easy with the built in Elefante script installer available through my hosting site.  Speaking of hosting, I use Enkwebhosting.com!  Enkwebhosting features domains as low as $9.00 per year and monthly charges under $4!  It's crazy!  I love the powerful control panel, too!  If you've been shopping around for a new host, you should definitely try out this one.

Why use ImageShack, Photobucket, etc...

E-mail Print PDF

Honestly? I'm not sure why you would really need to. Naturally, there are a couple features of each that set them apart from the rest, but they aren't really needed. With MySpace, one can create slideshows of all of your images or just certain folders. There's a lot of tailoring that can be done to the slideshow, as well. The main thing to get out of this article, if nothing else, is that you DO NOT have to host your images elsewhere to display them on MySpace or wherever!

MySpace photo albums can be set to private, friends only, or me (which means only you get to see the contents). You'll have a link off to the right-hand side that allows you to either link to or embed in an email or comment that particular image. So, MySpace IS your image hoster now. No need to create new accounts elsewhere or having to subscribe because your image is popular and sucking up a lot of bandwidth.

MySpace doesn't appear to have any particular restrictions, at least none that are inhibiting, to what size or type of image you can upload. Their terms of service does prohibit pictures that are inappropriate for the viewing by the general audience, if you know what I mean.

I invite you to go ahead and check out the powerful features of the MySpace photo albums! Go ahead, take a look...

RSS blog feed - The MySpace Method

E-mail Print PDF

My previous article explained how to obtain any MySpace blog via RSS or Atom feed. MySpace also has a their own implementation of the RSS feed via the blog home page. If you go to your blog and look toward the top of the page (below the top banner and all), you'll see a couple links, one of whch says "rss". If you click on this link or copy it to your feed aggregator of choice, you'll have a feed of your blog - or any blog for that matter. All you have to do is change the "friendID" part of the feed.

Here is how my blog feed would look:

MySpace Friends List

E-mail Print PDF

There are a number of sites allowing you to generate some HTML code to insert into your MySpace profile for displaying varying numbers of your friends. MySpace added an enhancement at some point allowing you to select the number of friends you wish to display. Also, you can randomize your friends, if you're not big on keeping certain ones at the top of your list.

RSS or Atom feed of MySpace blog

E-mail Print PDF

It is easy to create an RSS or Atom feed of your MySpace blog. I found this nifty site at http://makedatamakesense.com/myspace/.

This is so easy, it is almost ridiculous! All you have to do is type into the field next to the button that says "Create feed of blog" the following: http://blog.myspace.com/[USER_NAME_HERE]. In my case, it would be http://blog.myspace.com/enkwebhosting.

Here is what mine will give you:

http://makedatamakesense.com/myspace/?url=

http%3A%2F%2Fblog.myspace.com%2F

enkwebhosting&format=rss

If you insert that into your feed aggregator or your browser, you will be presented with a feed of my MySpace blog. How cool is that?

Installing Joomla! on a 1and1 Shared Host

E-mail Print PDF

There are never enough instructions on how to do things. Sometimes there are too many, yet not what you need for your particular niche installation. If you've been reading my weblog here, you know I recently moved my enkognedo.com setup over to my 1and1 hosting account. It will be so much easier to manage than having to deal with a home based server and web hop redirection around port 80.

First, download the joomla package you wish to install. Transfer the file to your main directory or to the directory of your choosing. One thing to keep in mind is that the joomla package unpacks WHERE IT IS, so it will attempt to overwrite anything in that directory. I put my installation in a directory named "enk1". I was logged in via ssh and unzipped the .gz file of joomla to that directory.

You should have already created your database and have your database information handy to plug into the installation setup of your new Joomla! Once you have everything decompressed into the correct directory, simply type the URL to get the installation script running, ex: http://enkognedo.com/enk1. This will bring up your new Joomla! site and prompt your for a few things such as your database information.

If you're using a shared hosting service with 1and1, I recommend using .htaccess to direct your visitors to your new site, otherwise, they will end up at your root site.

Inside Gaming

  • I recently received the Mass Effect 2 game for Xbox 360 as a gift!  I've got to say, this is one hell of a sequel game to Mass Effect!  The storyline is as intense and involved as ever and the graphics and sound are unsurpassed!

    If I could complain at all, I'd complain about the time it takes to load a game.  Only take about a second to save one, but loading is more like 30 seconds - maybe more.  So, needless to say, moving around from the main screen to in-game can be quite time cumbersome and annoying.

  • Flashpoint just didn't get the high marks it deserved.  For those who like local, campaign play, this is the game for you.  It is intense, very difficult and will keep you on the edge of your seat figuring and carrying out that perfect strategy.

    There is a lot of evasive or eluding type play - meaning that you don't always have to engage the enemy just because you can see them.  If you want to survive in this game, you have to be tactically sound in your decisions, well disciplined, and patient.

  • The graphics were great, the individual scenes awesome, the length of play...   HIGHLY disappointing!

    I played this game for just over 11 hours.  I don't consider myself a "gamer".  I've always thought of gamers as those who buy every new game as it becomes available to buy and play it straight through to the finish.  Some of these people even use the system to quickly play it, take it back or trade it in for another, or whatever.
