There are never enough instructions on how to do things. Sometimes there are too many, yet not what you need for your particular niche installation. If you've been reading my weblog here, you know I recently moved my enkognedo.com setup over to my 1and1 hosting account. It will be so much easier to manage than having to deal with a home based server and web hop redirection around port 80.
First, download the joomla package you wish to install. Transfer the file to your main directory or to the directory of your choosing. One thing to keep in mind is that the joomla package unpacks WHERE IT IS, so it will attempt to overwrite anything in that directory. I put my installation in a directory named "enk1". I was logged in via ssh and unzipped the .gz file of joomla to that directory.
You should have already created your database and have your database information handy to plug into the installation setup of your new Joomla! Once you have everything decompressed into the correct directory, simply type the URL to get the installation script running, ex: http://enkognedo.com/enk1. This will bring up your new Joomla! site and prompt your for a few things such as your database information.
If you're using a shared hosting service with 1and1, I recommend using .htaccess to direct your visitors to your new site, otherwise, they will end up at your root site.
